Today is my school’s athletics carnival, which is supposed to be compulsory for all students to attend, whether you are participating or not.
If you don’t attend, you have to have a good reason and if not, you will get a detention.
This makes me mad for so many reasons. We are constantly told to be who you are, and that some people are good at different things and that it’s okay to have different talents.
Yet from a very early age, we are forced to attend these athletic events, where if you don’t attend you are punished, and a persons worth is dictated by how fast you run or how high you jump, and even if you do compete and fail you are ridiculed.
There is no such thing as a compulsory art day, or music carnival, because society has made us believe that everybody should love sports and that if you don’t enjoy sports there is something wrong with you and you should be punished.
Everyone is different, everyone is unique, and if athletics is something you are good at then that is fantastic and commendable, but if it isn’t then you shouldn’t be forced to do it.
